Questions to Spark Conversation

Here are some question you may use before you start reading to activate previous knowledge or generate curiosity for the story, questions to engage young readers as you read the story and elaborate on new vocabulary, and questions to spark conversation after reading is over, to dive deeper into the theme or subject, and reflect together about what we just read/listened.

Let’s use my book, Simona’s New Adventure, as an example / Vamos a usar mi libro La Nueva Aventura de Simona, como ejemplo:

Before Reading / Antes de leer:

1. Looking at the front cover, what do you think the story is about?
2. Reading the title, what do you think the story is about?
3. Have you heard the word “Adventure”? Do you know what it means?
4. Could you think of and share a recent adventure you enjoyed?
5. Who would you like to invite to your next adventure?

1. Mirando la portada, ¿de que crees que se trata el cuento?
2. Leyendo el título, ¿de que crees que se trata el cuento?
3. ¿Has escuchado la palabra “Aventura”? ¿Sabes lo que significa?
4. ¿Puedes pensar y compartir alguna aventura reciente que has disfrutado?
5. ¿A quién te gustaría invitar a tu próxima aventura?

During Reading / Mientras leemos:

1. What would you like to do when you grow up?
2. What are some of the things Simona is trying to put into her suitcase? (Let’s list them together!)
3. Where are some places we can write our names?
4. Have you heard the word memory, do you know the meaning of the word memory, what is a good/positive memory you have?

1. ¿Qué te gustaría hacer cuando crezcas?
2. ¿Cuáles son algunas de las cosas que Simona esta tratando de meter en su maleta? (¡Vamos a hacer la lista juntos!)
3. ¿Cuáles son algunos lugares donde podemos escribir nuestros nombres?
4. ¿Has escuchado la palabra recuerdo/memoria, sabes el significado de la palabra recuerdo/memoria, cuál es un recuerdo positivo que tienes?

After Reading / Después de leer:

1. What is one thing Simona dreams of being when she grows up?
2. What is the new adventure Simona is preparing for?
3. Who is going with Simona in her new adventure?
4. What is Simona feeling at having to leave her home?
5. What are some of the things that she is trying to pack?
6. What does Simona do in fear of losing her home?
7. Have you ever been stuck by indecision? What have you done in those situations to reach a conclusion or make a choice?
8. To whom does Simona go for help?
9. What is Dad’s advice to Simona?
10. What does Simona learn about Home and Memories?

1. ¿Cuál es una cosa que Simona sueña ser cuando crezca?
2. ¿Cuál es la nueva aventura para la que Simona se esta preparando?
3. ¿Quién va con Simona en su nueva aventura?
4. ¿Qué esta sintiendo Simona al tener que dejar su casa?
