Counting with Frida / Contando con Frida

Hi! I’m Ms. Gaby and below you’ll find a quick guide to use while reading the fully bilingual board book Counting with Frida / Contando con Frida.

Before Reading:

  • Let’s look at the front cover, do you know who was Frida Kahlo? What do you think this book might be about?
  • Let’s look at the back cover for some clues.
  • Do you know what counting (contar) is?
  • This book was written by Patty Rodriguez and Ariana Stein, they are the co-authors.

During Reading:

  • This book has short simple text, so as we read, we can take our time, and concentrate on pronouncing and elaborating on the key words. In this case, we can count together the items on each page, in English and Spanish:
    • One – Uno/Una
    • Blue – Azul
    • House – Casa
    • Two – Dos
    • Paint Brushes – Pinceles
    • Three – Tres
    • Flowers – Flores
    • Four – Cuatro
    • Dresses – Vestidos
    • Five – Cinco
    • Portraits – Retratos
    • Six – Seis
    • Clouds – Nubes
    • Seven – Siete
    • Fruits – Frutas
    • Eight – Ocho
    • Parrots – Loros
    • Nine – Nueve
    • Leaves – Hojas
    • Ten – Diez
    • Toes – Dedos

After Reading:

  • Let’s talk about what we just read/listened to:
    • What is the color of Frida’s house (casa)? (Azul)
    • How many flowers (flores) was she wearing on her head? (Tres)
    • How many clouds (nubes) were there in the sky? (Seis)
    • How many fruits (frutas) were there on the table? (Siete)
    • Let’s count our fingers (dedos de las manos) together! (In English and Spanish)
    • Let’s play some Counting with Frida Bingo! (Read the story again and say the key words in either English or Spanish. The child/children will have to find them in their Bingo cards). To mark the cards, you may use color pencils, or pieces of paper/construction paper.
      • Bingo cards templates:

PS: This book is a wonderful introduction to the life, work and creative world of Frida Kahlo. To expand on this topic with your young reader, or engage older readers and students, we invite you to check out this free lesson by Llamitas Spanish.
