I Like Myself / Me gusta como soy

Hi! I’m Ms. Gaby and below you’ll find a quick guide to use while reading the fully bilingual board book I Like Myself / Me gusta como soy.

Before Reading:

  • Let’s look at the front cover, what do you see?, Does the character looks happy or sad?, What do you think this story might be about?
  • Let’s look at the back cover for some clues.
  • What is one thing you like about yourself? (prompt the child to answer by saying: Me gusta …)
  • This book was written by Karen Beaumont, she is the author.

During Reading:

  • This book has short, simple text, so as we read, we can take our time, and concentrate on pronouncing and elaborating on the key words:
    • I Like – Me gusta
    • Eyes – Ojos
    • Ears – Orejas
    • Nose – Nariz
    • Fingers – Dedos
    • Toes – Dedos de los pies
    • Fast – Rápido
    • Slow – Lento
    • Inside – Adentro
    • Outside – Afuera
    • Upside down – De cabeza
    • Think – Pensar
    • Say – Decir
    • Porcupine – Puercoespín

After Reading:

Let’s talk about what we just read/listened to:

  • What are some of the body parts mentioned in the story? (prompt the child to answer in English or Spanish)
  • How do you say fast in Spanish? (move your hand fast as you say the word)
  • What does lento mean in English? (move your hand slowly to give the child a clue about the meaning of the word)
  • What is pensar? (tap your head to give the child a clue)
  • Let’s make a self-portrait, showing all the things we like about ourselves. The drawing could include a list of words or sentences starting with Me gusta/an or I like…
    • All children should be encouraged to “write” their list of adjectives or sentences. Even those who have yet to master writing can practice grabbing the writing tool and the foundational fine motor skills.
