Story with a Song/ Cuento con canción

Hi! I’m Ms. Gaby and below you’ll find a quick guide to use while reading one of our books for the Spring season. This books is particularly useful with younger readers and language learners because it rhymes, and there is a song about it! Below the links to the song in English and Spanish.

Before Reading:

  • Let’s get ready to use our hands to help the storyteller! We move our hands and sign together: “Saco mis manitas, las pongo a bailar, las cierro, las abro, las vuelvo a guardar.” “I take out my hands, and I make them sway, I open and close them, and put them away.”
  • Let’s look at the front cover and the back cover for clues.
  • Let’s count the little ducks together! One, two, three, four, five. Uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco.
  • This book was illustrated by Annie Kubler and Sarah Dellow.

During Reading:

  • This book has short, simple text in rhyme. As we read, we can take our time, use our intonation, concentrate on pronouncing and elaborating on the key words:
    • Five little ducks – Cinco patitos
    • Mother duck – Mamá pata
    • Hill – Colina
    • Over – Arriba / Sobre
    • Far away – Lejos / Lejano
    • Four – Cuatro
    • Three – Tres
    • Two – Dos
    • One – Un/Uno
    • None – Ningúno
    • All – Todos
  • You could retell the story adding other places the little ducks went through: over a hill, around a pond, through a forest, under a bridge.

After Reading:

  • Let’s talk about what we just read/listened to:
    • Let’s count together, how many little ducks were there in the story? (encourage children to use their hands to count from 1 to 5).
    • The five little ducks went over a ________ (Hill / Colina).
    • Whos was asking them to come back? (Mother duck / Mamá pata).
    • What was one word in the story you already knew (in English and Spanish)?
    • What was one new word you learned in the story? (and how do you say it in the other language?)
    • Let’s look at the last page of the story for inspiration and make a drawing of five little ducks going over a hill or swimming in a pond.
