Hi! I’m Ms. Gaby and below you’ll find a quick guide to use while reading our selection of books with a seasonal theme, starting with Spring/Primavera.

  • Spring / Primavera (board book 0-4)
  • Something is Happening in the City / Algo está pasando en la ciudad (hardcover 6-8)

Before Reading:

  • Let’s think and talk about what we know about Spring / Primavera.
  • What are some of the things that happen in Primavera? How are the plants and trees different? What other changes can we see in nature’s fauna and flora during the spring season?
  • What do we see when we walk around our city/ciudad? (town/pueblo)
  • Let’s look for clues about these changes in the front or back cover of the book you’ve chosen.
  • Remember to point out the name of the author/authors and illustrator.

During Reading:

  • As you read, take your time, concentrate on pronouncing and elaborating. Highlight the words and concepts related to the Spring theme:
    • Spring / Primavera
    • Birds / Pajaritos
    • New / Nuevos
    • Baby animals / Animales bebés
    • Sunshine / Sol brillante
    • Bees / Abejas
    • Butterflies / Mariposas
    • Seeds / Semillas
    • To grow / Crecer
    • Breeze / Brisa
    • Insects / Insectos
    • Clouds / Nubes
    • Roof / Tejado
    • Squirrel / Ardilla
    • Bookstore / Librería
    • Pond / Estanque
    • Sky / Cielo

After Reading:

  • Let’s talk about what we just read/listened to:
    • So, what are some of the things that happen en Primavera? What are some of the changes we see in nature?
    • Which insects and animals did we see/find in the story? (prompt or help the child to answer in either English or Spanish)
    • What do you like most about Primavera?
    • What was one word in the story you already knew (in English and Spanish)?
    • What was one new word you learned in the story? (and how do you say it in the other language?)
    • Let’s look at the last page of the story for inspiration and make a drawing of our spring garden! (You could also find a way to measure/track your child’s growth at home! and make this a monthly ritual)
